Frequently Asked Questions
Naturopathy
-
Naturopathy is a complementary healthcare model that emphasizes the body's innate ability to heal itself, targeting the root cause of illness rather than simply symptom treatment and searching for a diagnosis. It utilizes natural remedies and therapies such as herbal medicine, nutrition, supplementation, hydrotherapy, and lifestyle counselling to support overall well-being and restore balance. Naturopathic practice focuses on prevention and supporting the body's self-healing mechanisms, fostering a comprehensive approach to health and wellness.
-
The principles of naturopathy emphasize the healing power of nature, root cause identification, and the body's inherent ability to heal. They promote holistic patient care, prevention, and patient education, distinguishing naturopathic medicine from conventional approaches. Naturopathy encourages individuals to take an active role in their health management, prioritizing non-invasive treatments for overall well-being.
-
Natural and integrative medicine offers tailored care by addressing root causes, utilizing natural remedies, and fostering collaboration for optimal health. This holistic approach merges traditional healing methods with contemporary medical insights, ensuring comprehensive solutions for optimal health and vitality. By emphasizing holistic well-being and empowering individuals to proactively manage their health, naturopathy advocates for a balanced and sustainable approach to healthcare, promoting lasting wellness.
-
Naturopathy emphasizes holistic health and preventive medicine, utilizing natural remedies and leveraging the body's innate ability to restore balance. For example, naturopaths may interpret bloodwork for optimal ranges rather than solely focusing on disease states outside of large ‘normal’ ranges. We address subclinical findings through a multifaceted approach, avoiding reliance solely on synthetic pharmaceutical interventions. In contrast, conventional medicine practice primarily focuses on establishing diagnosis and symptom treatment, often limited by financial and time constraints seen throughout medical systems around the planet.
-
Naturopathy and homeopathy differ primarily in the depth and bredth of their foundations and evidence basis. Naturopathy, a holistic healthcare system, integrates traditional wisdom with current evidence-based research and focuses on treating the root cause of illness and promoting overall wellness. In contrast, homeopathy is a single modality relying solely on extensive anecdotal evidence and without a scientific foundation, employing highly diluted substances to stimulate self-healing mechanisms.
-
Absolutely! Integrative medicine acknowledges the interconnectedness of organ systems, viewing imbalances as the underlying cause of disease. As such, naturopaths are equipped to address a wide range of health concerns, including diagnosed conditions. Whether you're managing a specific diagnosis or striving to enhance overall well-being, naturopathic support offers personalized care tailored to your individual needs.
-
While naturopaths provide valuable support, they cannot replace a General Practitioner (GP). As a degree-qualified practitioner, I can work alongside your GP and other healthcare providers to ensure comprehensive care, leading to optimal health outcomes. This collaborative approach, combining the strengths of naturopathy and conventional medicine, is the most effective way to achieve and maintain overall wellness.
-
The duration of naturopathic care varies significantly depending on individual factors such as the complexity and duration of the condition, commitment to implementing recommendations, financial resources, and the synergy between the client and practitioner. Healing journeys are unique to each person, so it's challenging to provide a specific timeframe. However, the simple act of being whole-heartedly supported by a naturopath can often leave people feeling empowered from the get-go. Generally, achieving great results requires dedication to the process and collaboration between the individual and practitioner.
-
In New Zealand, naturopaths cannot diagnose due to the absence of medical qualifications. Diagnosis isn't central to naturopathic principles either, which prioritize addressing root causes over symptomatic treatment. However, naturopaths' understanding of anatomy and physiology enables collaboration with medical doctors, ensuring holistic patient care through comprehensive treatment plans.
Herbal Medicine
-
Herbal medicine draws upon the medicinal properties of plants, a practice deeply ingrained in historical traditions spanning centuries. We now know that certain constituents (ie. chemical components that make up plants) have medical applications in us humans, and in therapeutic doses, herbs offer an effective and non-addictive means of enhancing overall health. At Arrowtown Apothecary, we practice medical herbalism, whereby herbal tinctures used are rigorously tested, New Zealand-grown wherever possible, and always ethically and sustainably sourced. Your unique herbal presciption may take the form of herbal liquid, cream, salve, dried herbs, capsules, or herbal tea.

Across cultures, herbs have been utilized to address a myriad of health concerns for as long as we’ve walked this planet, ranging from wound treatment to sleep to chronic ailments. Today, evidence-based research supports the effectiveness of herbal remedies, with medical herbalists integrating ancient wisdom with modern medical knowledge to enhance health.
-
Yes, herbal medicine is generally considered safe when used appropriately. However, it's essential to consult with a qualified practitioner to ensure proper dosage and minimize the risk of adverse effects, especially when combining herbs with medications or supplements. While rare, allergic reactions or interactions can occur, highlighting the importance of informed and supervised use of herbal remedies.
-
Herbal medicine supports stress by modulating the body's neuroendocrine system. Herbs like chamomile and lemon balm contain compounds that can interact with neurotransmitter receptors, promoting relaxation and reducing anxiety. Another great example is adaptogenic herbs such as ashwagandha and rhodiola, which regulate the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, enhancing resilience to stressors. These mechanisms contribute to herbal medicine's ability to mitigate stress and promote emotional balance and well-being.

The cost of naturopathy varies based on individual circumstances and treatment needs. Financial and energetic investments often influence the outcome, with more investment typically yielding greater results. For complex or chronic cases, functional testing and regular follow-ups may be necessary, potentially increasing costs. However, less complex cases such as an acute health concern or a supplement review would likely be less expensive, depending on the extent of services required. You can read more about the type of investment you may need to make here.

In New Zealand, naturopathy lacks regulation, allowing anyone to practice under this title, which can be concerning. As a result, naturopathy is not currently subsidized or supported through ACC funding. This is unfortunate, considering the abundant evidence-based literature supporting its efficacy in enhancing health. In contrast, other countries like Australia have regulatory measures in place, and certain health insurance plans cover complementary therapies including naturopathy. In the USA, Naturopathic Doctors (NDs) undergo extensive training similar to Medical Doctors (MDs), but emphasizing naturopathic principles, and you are unable to use the title Naturopath unless you hold full ND credentials. Thus, it's crucial to seek qualified and registered practitioners to guide your health journey.
